Spine-tingling were-leopard fun
Leopard’s Daughter is a markedly original crime novel with elements of the occult. In a world where vampires and werewolves exist, but are extremely rare, Bobby Sandar, his wife, Olivia, and their two oldest children are were-leopards. Bobby and Olivia are Secret Service agents. Following Bobby’s death, Olivia feels the need for a fresh start. She takes a job as a detective in the sheriff’s department of a rural western county. Olivia’s first assignment is to go undercover as an exotic dancer in a nightclub run by gangsters. She has to battle mobbed-up criminals, a terrorist leader who is aware of Olivia’s history and abilities, and human traffickers to save her family and herself.

Excerpt

Olivia found the high grass was making her search difficult, and therefore very slow. I might’ve been a bit optimistic when I told Mullins I’d be done by late afternoon, she thought. The bugs are fierce. Why the hell did I turn down Mullins’s offer of two deputies to help? I’m hungry! I should’ve asked Mullins to have someone bring me some lunch.
Something caught her eye. It looked like a boot print similar to one of the footprints outside Gordinier’s apartment building. She bent over for a closer look. As she did, she felt a bullet pass over her body, right where her head would’ve been. It was followed immediately after by the sound of a rifle.
She dove to the ground and into the high grass, just as dirt was kicked up by another shot, again barely missing her. She scurried to her right and into a small depression, taking out her service weapon as she did, along with her phone. She called for backup. I doubt they’ll get here in time to do much good, she thought.
Raising her head slightly, she saw motion in the grass in more than one spot. They, whoever they were, were approaching her position. She’d have to make a move soon. Knowing she was unlikely to hit anything with a handgun at this distance, she fired several shots, hoping the opposition would duck down and not see what she was doing. Then she moved quickly further to her right.

“Holy Christ, Lamar, that bitch is fucking fast!” the man to Walker’s right said. “Thought you said Otis would nail her, and all we had to do was finish the job! Now she’s shooting at us!”
“Keep your voice down, asshole,” Walker said. “We just gotta move careful. Otis’ll keep her pinned down. All she’s got is a nine. Can’t hit nothing with that less we get real close. We got these here Berretta M12s Krockmyer got for us. There’s fucking six of us. We get close enough, we spray the area around her. Bound to have one of us hit her.”
***
Nearly invisible in the high grass, the leopard was motionless as she watched the man creep toward where she crouched. When he was close enough, she leaped, grasped his throat in her jaws, and ripped. He could only make a soft, strangled noise before he expired.
The leopard changed. Olivia took a few seconds to catch her breath. She took off the man’s shirt and put it on, not worrying about the blood-stained front. The man was big, and his shirt came down to her knees. She picked up his submachine gun, took a second to admire it, and searched his body. She found two spare magazines and a hunting knife. She used the knife on the man’s throat to try and obscure the fact that he’d been killed by a large cat. Then, hunched over, she headed toward where the other men were, taking care to be as silent as possible.
Olivia dropped to the ground as she heard the sound of several machine guns firing, but no bullets came near her. She slithered forward, keeping low, until she saw five men in a ditch. They were facing away from her and firing toward the spot where she’d deliberately left her clothes visible.
“Police!” she called without rising. “Drop your guns and raise your hands! You’re all under arrest for murder!”
The men whirled around and began to fire, but, except for knowing she was behind them, they had no idea of her exact location. All their shots went wild. Hers did not.
